4 STEPS TO DEAL WITH REJECTION IN PHARMA SALES


Rejection can be defined as act of pushing someone or something away.

Rejection are the fact of one`s life. Everybody gets rejected some time. 

Rejection hurts, can make you sad, can make you angry, can surprise you and can leads towards negative thought.

In all rejection is an unavoidable and is integral part of life.

 


Rejection can be at work place, in personal life like love or friendship, at school and even when applying for the job. With time, most of the people get over it.

However when you are sales the rejection for the sales person it is full time, daily job. It is how they put bread on the table.

Fear of rejection is one of main reason the sales profession is considered as tough profession and some time leads to high turnover rates for the beginners.

But the mentally strong person use the feeling of rejection in learning to develop the resilience to hear NO and bounce back quickly and stay motivated and also is an essential emotion  today for any sales person.

Sales persons generally experience rejection when…..

  • When doctors rejects your appointment or when he does not prescribe your products.
  • When doctor stops prescribing your products and start prescribing your competitor brand.
  • You get small increment in salary than anticipated one.
  • You do not receive deserving promotion.
  • Your senior colleague takes all credit of better performance for the project where your contribution was substantial.
  • No attention is given to point of view and even blamed or criticized during sales presentation meetings.

Now the question is how to deal with such “NO, good bye”

First of all be confident in your own abilities and strength.

And here are 4 steps to deal with rejection.

  1. Everyone gets rejected- Acknowledge it and take time cool off.

Cool off can be good idea by taking some time away from someone who has rejected you, as hurting them back may be satisfying but won`t help in long run.

At the same time one must keep it mind that it is difficult to get potential customer to say “YES” every time. One must be prepared emotionally to handle rejection. If you are “NOT hearing NO” means you are not doing any business and living in comfort zone.

However hearing “NO” should not damage your enthusiasm or confidence. 

  1. See rejection as learning opportunity and don’t stop trying.

Take cool off moment as a learning opportunity and try to find ways that you can set yourself up for better odds of success in the future.

In case you have lost to your competitors because of lack of Product Knowledge, Selling Skills, Communication Skill or any other relevant skills. It is the time to upgrade the mentioned skills so that you can improve In Clinic Performance.

Therefore rejection is not end of the line but the time for self introspection and part of career building process. Never ever stop trying till you succeed.

All this is true for every situation of your life.


  1. Talk to professional and ask for the help.

When you are rejected by the doctor for appointment or your company has not given you deserving promotion and you are not sure, that how to handle the same. Do not be afraid to ask for feedback or input from friend, senior colleague, professional etc.

As in such situation you really do need one!

However please take feedback and criticism from them in a positive way so that you can understand the real reason for your rejection. In this way you will be able to understand the specific areas which you need to work upon and improve. As mentioned above it can be Selling Skills, Communication Skills, Body Language or something else.

Once real reason for rejection is identified, accept it gracefully and boldly, make all out effort to improve the need area.


  1. Don’t let rejection define you but take this as a way to move forward for positive change.

Mentally strong people do not generalize themselves as failure when they are rejected. If one person, one doctor or one company turns them down for any assignment or project, they don’t declare themselves as incompetent.

They keep rejection in proper perspective. As they believe that one person`s opinion, or one single incident should never defines you that who you are.

Based upon the strength, creativity they have and also based upon the feedback from peers and seniors they work out a plan for themselves and begin time bound improvement activities.

If required they surround with supportive people like coach, mentor, guide who can help them to improve upon weak link and progress in career.

Remember that no one in his life wish to be rejected or to be called as failure.  However accept rejection and handle gracefully and with total professionalism.
